What is Sesamin

Sesamin is a lignan that is found in sesame seeds. A lignan is a molecule that combines with a receptor to activate that receptor, and create a response. The receptor and lignan will then perform a function in the body. Sesamin is a lignan for the Peroxisome Proliferator-ActivatorReceptor Alpha (PPARalpha). The receptor is found in muscle, liver, and heart tissue and is involved in the oxidation (burning) of fat. Sesamin has been shown to be a potent PPARalpha activator. The majority of fat oxidation occurs in skeletal muscle cells and the liver. PPARalpha activation by sesamin increases fat oxidation by increasing the expression of enzymes involved in the oxidation of fatty acids.
